Product Description 2009 Reprint edition of 1961. Sonora Carver was an American entertainer, most notable as one of the first female horse divers. Carver answered an ad placed by "Doc" William Frank Carver in 1923 for a diving girl and soon earned a place in circus history. Her job was to mount a running horse as it reached the top of a forty-foot (sometimes sixty-foot) tower and sail down along the animal's back as it plunged into a deep pool of water directly below. Sonora was a sensation and soon became the lead diving girl for Doc Carver's act as they traveled the country. In 1931, Sonora was blinded, a retinal detachment, due to hitting the water off-balance with her eyes open.while diving her horse, Red Lips, on New Jersey's Steel Pier, the act's permanent home since 1929. After her accident Sonora continued to dive horses until 1942.

A Great Read! April 27, 2009 D. C. Shearer (Belgrade, MT United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm so glad the book has finally been republished. I'm a middle school librarian and found this book on the shelf years ago. It's a sad-looking tattered, green book :( but one of my favorite to highlight in a books-to-movies book talk. It is always popular with the students, consequently, I've been looking for another copy for some time. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in horses, the depression era, women's issues, or to just wanting to read an excellent book.

This book is so good, and so inspiring. I was lucky enough to be able to get it from a nearby college.
They need to republish this book!!!
Every horse-lover will adore... April 26, 2009 Michelle Brown (New York, NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After long last this book has been re-published. Previously, only the original edition from 1961 was available at completely unreasonable prices. This is a fantastic book that documents an exciting and unique part of Americana that no longer exists. The diving horses act was truly something spectacular and to hear about it from one of the most well-known diving girls is a priviledge. Consider yourselves lucky that this book is now once again available to inspire all people, young and old.
Back in Print and Worth Buying! August 20, 2009 Kate Emburg (Mount Carmel, PA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you liked the movie WILD HEARTS CAN'T BE BROKEN, you'll want to read A GIRL AND FIVE BRAVE HORSES. The true story is far more compelling in Sonora's own words. Horse lovers will enjoy the book even more than the film, as it concentrates on training the diving horses and the unique personality of each animal. Sonora herself is remarkable, insisting there is nothing difficult or scary about riding a diving horse, even as she describes other girls who were hired but couldn't master the stunt. Even after losing her sight in a diving accident, Sonora never considers quitting. Her obvious love for her horses is the perfect answer to anyone who may suspect the horses were abused, or forced to dive. Sonora says the horses enjoyed performing, and the reader believes every word of her honest memoir. It's great to have this book back in print at a reasonable price, since battered used copies were scarce, and selling for $100 and up.
Republished: A Girl and Five Brave Horses June 12, 2008 Mrs. O (Triadelphia, WV USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A Girl and Five Brave HorsesThis is a very touching book of a woman and her exciting life. Sonora Carver has been an inspiration to many people. The republished book is as good as the original. My only problem with the republished book is the picture on the cover. It's not the original cover photo and the photo has nothing to do with a diving horse. Sonora was a great woman and I'm so glad that I now own my own copy of this wonderful book. I'm happy that others will discover the story of Sonora and the people who have wanted this book for so long will now have the opportunity to purchase it.
